SCALING UP A NEW APPROACH TO IT SECURITY
TY MILLER, FOUNDER AND CLOUD SECURITY INNOVATOR
Ty Miller is the driving force behind the launch of specialist security consultancy, Threat Intelligence, and most recently the introduction of the world’s first dedicated security automation cloud, Evolve. His vision is only matched by his commitment to truly make a difference to the global IT security industry.
HOW DID YOU KICK OFF YOUR CAREER IN IT SECURITY?
After completing a BTech degree I kicked off my career at Macquarie University and it was a great introduction into managing security issues on a large scale. This is also where I learnt how to hack. I moved from this role into the IT security consulting arena and for the past 15 years I have worked very closely with clients to keep them safe.
WHAT LED TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THREAT INTELLIGENCE?
I cut my consultancy teeth at a boutique security consulting firm and in my time there I learnt the only way to change how people better respond to security breaches is to give them a choice. I really wanted to steer companies and individuals away from what I thought was a traditional security approach. Traditional security requires considerable budget to try and track where damage can come from and resolve the issues when breaches happen.
But really no corporate security team or individual can keep up with the new attack techniques the world is experiencing. They were being outpaced and outgunned in the budget department. So, it was time for me to launch Threat Intelligence and then the Evolve Security Automation platform to introduce the concept of automation into our security approach.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE FIRST SEVEN YEARS WITH THREAT INTELLIGENCE?
I can sum up the first seven years with Threat Intelligence with one word – innovation. We realised there was only one way to manage the growing attacks and evolving global threats with limited IT security resources. With so much change around us we needed to automate a scalable and affordable security platform that could really tackle the issues every organisation faced. We then developed the Evolve platform – and now our goal is to scale the business globally.
WAS THERE ONE REASON WHY YOU DECIDED TO DEVELOP THE EVOLVE SECURITY AUTOMATION PLATFORM?
There was not one single reason why Evolve was launched – rather it was more a growing list of why you wouldn’t automate IT security, particularly for SMEs and individuals who need more support. Breaches were also changing for organisations around the world. They were larger, creating a much larger negative impact and targeting a really broad cross section of the business world. Every type of organisation imaginable from major corporates to the dentist down the road. And research was telling us organisations that don’t implement security automation were facing much higher remediation costs – up to 95% in some circumstances.
WHAT MAKES EVOLVE DIFFERENT?
Evolve is the world’s first dedicated security automation cloud. And by first, we really do mean first. There may be other automated solutions in the market however they don’t manage the full end-to-end automated security journey like Evolve does.
Evolve covers everything from automated compromised account monitoring to automated penetration testing, automated incident response, automated security infrastructure orchestration and automated cyber threat intelligence.
It has been designed to be the world’s first security automation cloud that is highly scalable and flexible so organisations can customise it to meet security budgets, enhance their security capabilities, and expand their skills to be able to stay safe moving forward into the future. Evolve has security at the heart of the platform, ranging from Evolve Regions for data sovereignty purposes through to an internal Evolve Global Certificate Authority for encryption and authentication purposes.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR THREAT INTELLIGENCE?
Right now, we are totally focused on two areas which includes our consulting with clients and scaling up the rollout of Evolve. Every day we are fine tuning how best to help clients trial our new security automation platform and how to onboard and support those clients now relying on Evolve. The entire team is involved in the development, testing and rollout. And the team is growing and that’s really exciting.
Our plan is to also continue our presence at Black Hat USA in 2020. We’ve been presenting and training at Black Hat for over 10 years with our courses including “The Shellcode Lab”, “Practical Threat Intelligence” and “The Security Automation Lab”.
WITH SUCH A BUSY SCHEDULE HOW DO YOU RELAX?
I love what I do but it’s really important to balance the huge demands of security consulting and product development with downtime. For me that involves spending time with family and surfing.
